Want to Affect Your Dog’s Mood? Start With Nutrition First

Dogs have their own personalities, just like every human does. Some are friendly, while others are wary around other dogs or new people. Some dogs are mischievous, while others are more somber.

You might not be aware of this, but you can also impact a dog’s mood with the nutritional values of the food you are giving them. One like Open Farm Dog Food, which has high-quality ingredients, is a good choice. In this article, we will talk some more about how the nutrition your dog gets impacts their mood.

High-Quality Ingredients Can Put Your Dog in a Better Mood

Buying food for dogs can be a little overwhelming. There are so many options, and you may be getting contradictory information when you go on different websites. Generally, though, you can feel confident buying your dog food that has high-quality ingredients.

Just as you would feel sluggish if you ate food all day that has very little nutritional value, dogs will show a similar reaction if you only feed them food that does not have high-quality protein, grains, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. To find a food like this, you’ll want to look at the ingredients. The better dog foods often have limited ingredients and very few chemical additives.

Are More Expensive Foods Better?

If your dog seems sluggish or they are not playful and active, the food you’re buying them might be the problem. Maybe you are getting them one of the least expensive kinds of food on the market.

That does not necessarily mean you’re buying a low-quality food, but dog foods that don’t cost much are usually priced that way for a reason. You should pay attention to the ingredient panels and how the company describes the food on the packaging.

If the food is described as “dog food with turkey,” for instance, then turkey is not the main ingredient. You’re also not getting as much of the main protein source if the food is described as a “turkey meal.” These sorts of qualifying terms mean that filler ingredients, usually grains, make up the bulk of what your dog is getting.

Talk to Your Vet About What Kind of Food to Feed Your Dog

Vets are experts on animal behavior. If your dog seems sluggish or grumpy, then the food you’re giving them often has a great deal to do with that. Making an appointment with your vet and describing the issue can be helpful. You can tell the vet what kind of food you’re feeding the dog and see what they say.

If they tell you to go with a different brand of food, then you can try that. You might notice a difference in your dog’s behavior immediately.

Better dog foods often cost more, but if you’re concerned about your pet’s temperament, you should have no issue paying for a high-end food option. You’re the only one who makes these decisions as the animal’s owner, and you want them to lead a happy and fulfilling life.

  • My dogs are always happier when they have a full belly. I agree pet nutrition is so important. Just wish the cost of dog food, hasn’t risen as much as it has. I can’t afford to feed my pit mix the expensive stuff anymore. Thankfully, I haven’t noticed any issues with the food she is currently on. My Yorkie has to stay on a sensitive diet dog food. He has tummy issues and can’t eat chicken.

  • I have a dog and I would never feed him cheap food. That’s like feeding my kid fast for every meal. The more expensive food is worth it.
