Tips for Making Your Home Healthier for Your Family

Are you trying to make your home a healthier place for your family to live? We want our homes to be safe places for our children to grow up, but surprisingly there are things that can cause more harm to our children inside our homes than in the outside world. There is air pollution and chemicals in our cleaners, even the water that we drink isn’t as safe as you would think.

The good news is that there are things we can do to make our homes healthier for our families.  We’ve outlined a few below.

Make Your Own Cleaning Products

Store bought cleaning products are full of chemicals that might harm your family, whether alone or mixed together including carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and neurotoxins. These can cause early puberty, cancer, miscarriages, and can even affect brain activity.

Instead make your own cleaners at home. You can make almost anything with items you probably already have in your pantry. Vinegar is a great disinfectant, and rubbing alcohol mixed with water and vinegar is awesome at cleaning glass without leaving streaks.

Get A Dehumidifier

Humidity in your home can cause problems not only with the dampness in the home, but it can also cause problems with the air quality. Too high of humidity levels in the home can cause common allergy triggers to surface. This includes mold and mildew, and even dust mites. Read this article now to find out more.

A dehumidifier will help you to breathe easier and it can also help your food to last longer as well. You can get dehumidifiers in all shapes in sizes, from small ones that just go in your basement to whole house units. You can even get personal devices that can sit on your desk at work, find more recommendations on Toohumid.com.

Get A Water Filter

Tap water is definitely better for the planet than bottled water, but there are quite a few chemicals and contaminants. Even water that registers good by the EPA can contain trace amounts of pesticides, lead, and E. Coli.

To make your drinking water safer for your family you can buy a filter to help to get rid of the contaminants and leave your water fully safe for you family. There are filters that go on your sink faucets, filters that come in water jugs, or even larger filters that can sit on your kitchen counters.

Watch Out for Non-Stick Cookware

While it’s nice to not have your fried egg stick to the bottom of the pan, you need to be careful about what kinds of pans you are using. Most non-stick pans contain perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in the makeup of their non-stick coatings. One of these chemicals, PFOA, is a likely human carcinogen. Because of this many companies have agreed to stop using PFOA in their cookware.

If you want to stay on the safe side choose cookware options like cast iron, stainless steel, copper, and enamel coated pans to do your cooking. All of these options will allow you to cook meals for your family without worrying that your cookware is harming the ones you love.

Our homes are supposed to be our safe havens, things we put inside of it should not make it dangerous for us. Thankfully, even though some of these harmful things are common, there are alternatives. We can make healthy choices for our home and our families, allowing everyone to be happier in the process.
