Common household repairs and how to fix them.
Not every home repair requires an expensive service call. While there are certainly projects best left to licensed professionals, many common household problems can be fixed with a few basic tools and a little patience. Learning a handful of simple DIY home repairs can save you time, reduce maintenance costs, and help you keep your home in great condition throughout the year.
Many younger homeowners never had the opportunity to learn basic repair skills. As products became more disposable and hands on classes disappeared from many schools, simple home maintenance became less common. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy repairs almost anyone can learn with a little guidance.
Whether you own your home or rent, these beginner friendly repairs can help you solve everyday problems before they become expensive repairs.
Clear a Clogged Drain Before Calling a Plumber
A slow or clogged drain is one of the most common household issues. Before scheduling a plumbing appointment, try using a quality plunger to remove the blockage. In many cases, several firm plunges are enough to restore normal water flow.
If that does not work, a drain auger, often called a plumbing snake, can reach deeper into the pipe to remove hair, soap buildup, and other debris. These tools are inexpensive, easy to use, and available at most home improvement stores.
If multiple drains back up at the same time or sewage begins backing up into the home, it is time to contact a licensed plumber because the problem may involve your home’s main sewer line.
Troubleshoot Common Air Conditioner Problems
If your air conditioner is running but not cooling your home, there are several simple things you can check before scheduling a repair.
- Replace or clean a dirty air filter.
- Make sure the thermostat is set correctly.
- Check that the outdoor unit is free of leaves and debris.
- Inspect your circuit breaker if the system will not turn on.
- Verify that all air vents inside the home are open.
Many homeowners can solve basic cooling issues in just a few minutes. For additional troubleshooting information, the U.S. Department of Energy provides helpful maintenance recommendations for keeping air conditioners operating efficiently.
If your system frequently loses cooling, freezes over, or requires refrigerant, contact a qualified HVAC technician rather than attempting those repairs yourself.
Repair Small Holes in Drywall
Small nail holes, picture hanger holes, and minor dents are some of the easiest repairs you can make. A container of lightweight spackling compound, a putty knife, and fine sandpaper are usually all you need.
Fill the hole with spackle, smooth the surface, allow it to dry completely, then lightly sand until smooth. Finish with matching paint if necessary. This simple repair is especially useful before moving out of a rental property or preparing a home for sale.
Clean a Clogged Shower Head
If your shower has weak water pressure, mineral buildup may be blocking the spray openings. Fortunately, cleaning it is simple.
Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar and place it over the shower head so the spray surface is completely submerged. Secure the bag with a rubber band and allow it to soak overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and rinse the shower head thoroughly. Most mineral deposits will wash away easily, restoring stronger water flow.
Fix Sliding Doors That Stick
Sliding patio doors often become difficult to open because dirt and debris collect inside the track. Begin by vacuuming the track thoroughly and wiping it clean with a damp cloth.
Once clean, apply a silicone based lubricant to the track and rollers. Avoid using grease or heavy oil because these products attract more dirt over time. A properly cleaned and lubricated sliding door should move much more smoothly.
Replace Worn Weather Stripping
Another simple repair many homeowners overlook is replacing worn weather stripping around doors and windows. Damaged seals allow drafts, increase heating and cooling costs, and make your HVAC system work harder.
Replacement weather stripping is inexpensive and available in several styles. Installing new seals can improve your home’s energy efficiency while making it more comfortable throughout every season.
Know When to Call a Professional
While many household repairs are safe for beginners, some projects require specialized training. Electrical wiring, gas lines, structural damage, roofing repairs, major plumbing issues, and HVAC refrigerant work should always be handled by qualified professionals.
Knowing the difference between a simple DIY repair and a job that requires an expert can help protect both your home and your family’s safety.
Build Confidence One Repair at a Time
Every homeowner starts somewhere. Learning basic repairs like unclogging drains, patching drywall, cleaning shower heads, maintaining your air conditioner, and fixing sticky doors can save money while giving you greater confidence around your home.
With a small collection of basic tools and a willingness to learn, many everyday repairs become quick weekend projects instead of costly service calls.

These are so great! My husband has a touch of handiness, so these are all things that he could do. This will save a lot of money. Thanks!
I have fixed holes in the walls and the shower head but clogged drains… can’t quite stomach that one but luckily my husband is willing. I and my daughters both have long hair, we use screens but somehow there is always a drain that gets clogged at some point.
Great list of ideas. I had heard of that shower head trick with vinegar but not the other ones.
I had no idea I could buy an auger. I’ll be doing that next week. We have one drain that gets clogged all the time. Thank you! Great tips!
This is a great list that I’m bookmarking. I actually have a couple of these issues, so I’m going to take this advise before I start stressing it could be worse! Time to gather the household supplies to fix my shower head!
