What Are Your Eyes Telling You.

Eyes are not only windows to our soul; they are in fact windows to our inner health and the windows to our arteries. A close inspection of eyes can reveal the state of the liver, diabetes and cholesterol. The eyes are incredibly unique in that a specialist can see the optic nerve, arteries and veins, without the need for any invasive surgery. It is vitally important to keep your eye checks up to date, as regular eye examinations can reveal problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma at an early stage.

A Persistent Stye

Styes or chalazions are quite common and usually disappear of their own accord. However, if they keep recurring or last longer than three months, seek medical advice, as there may be an underlying reason for its persistency.

Itchy Eyes

Itchiness accompanied by a runny nose or sneezing could mean an allergy from airborne pollen, dust or animal fur. It could also mean an allergy to chemicals in cosmetics or cleaning products. See your doctor who may prescribe preservative free eye drops or an antihistamine. If your eyes feel as if they have foreign matter in them or they feel gritty, dry or burning, your eye may be inflamed. This is a common condition known as Blepharitis. Visit a doctor who may prescribe warm compresses and artificial tears or an antibiotic ointment.

Small lumps on the eyelid

Tiny yellow lumps could mean you may need to have your cholesterol checked. These are common and are just small fatty deposits. High cholesterol can put you at risk of high blood pressure, stroke or diabetes. A visual examination by a doctor will give you a quick diagnosis.

Yellowing of the white of the eye

This condition appears in many newborn infants and is known as jaundice. When present in adults, it can be an indication of problems with the gallbladder, bile ducts or liver. An immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary.

A blind spot in your vision

Many people suffer from optical migraines. This may or may not be accompanied by a headache but will disrupt your vision with bright dots or a wavy line. Foods such as caffeine or chocolate can trigger these optical migraines. Make sure you have this symptom checked out by a medical professional.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that everyone is always so busy. We all have lists that never get done. We all have the best of intentions to change our ways but one thing you must never do is, you must never delay an eye examination. A serious optical problem can easily be avoided if detected early enough. Have a look at http://dryeye.com.au for some great tips on eye health. The eye is quite transparent, so common eye diseases can be detected easily. People with a family history of eye diseases, cardiovascular disease or diabetes should be vigilant with their annual eye examinations. Detection of diseases can literally be diagnosed in the blink of an eye.
