Top 3 Tips for Decluttering Your Home

Did you know that there are 300,000 items in the average American household? That’s a lot of stuff!

What’s more, 48 percent of Americans believe their homes are at least somewhat cluttered and contain things they no longer use.

If you believe you fall into this 48 percent, it’s probably time to do something about it. Decluttering your home can make your space look a million times better, and, it can make you feel less stressed and anxious.

But if you have a super cluttered home, you probably don’t even know where to begin. Read on to learn the top 3 tips for decluttering your home.

1. Make Separate Piles

One of the best ways to keep things organized when decluttering your home is to make separate piles.

There are three types of piles you should have: one for donation, one for the trash, and one for selling.

If you’re having a tough time trying to decide what should go in each pile, you can ask yourself, “If my house burnt down, would this be an item I would try to replace immediately once my insurance kicked in?” If the answer is no, then that item should likely go in the donate, sell,  or toss pile.

In terms of what items should be donated, you’ll just want to make sure what you’re giving is still in usable condition. A few small scratches are fine, but you don’t want to donate anything that is completely falling apart.

Then, when you’re done separating your piles, you could use Self Service Dumpster Rental Services | Junk King and get a dumpster which can handle any kind of trash, even larger furniture.

2. Do a Little Bit at a Time

One of the main reasons people never get around to decluttering their home is because they feel like it’s too overwhelming of a project and the thought of starting the process just stresses them out.

If you fall into this category, it can help to declutter just a little bit at a time. One way to do this is to give away just one item each day. While it may not sound like a lot, by the end of the year you’ll have given away 365 items!

You can also pick 5-10 minute decluttering tasks to tackle once a week or so. For example, one day you could take a few minutes to declutter your makeup drawer, and another day you could take a few minutes to declutter your kids’ toys.

3. Try the Oprah Closet Hanger Experiment

If clothes are your biggest problem when it comes to clutter, then this tip is for you.

While Oprah didn’t invent this experiment herself, she was the one to bring it to the spotlight.

The process is simple. All you have to do is hang all of your clothes in reverse direction. Then, every time you wear a piece, return it to your closet, but now hang it the other way.

After a few months of doing this, you’ll probably notice that there were some items you never flipped around. This will give you a very clear picture of what you can get rid of.

As you can see, there are a lot of simple things you can do that will help you when decluttering your home. If you have any questions about the tips from above, please drop us a comment below.
