Accent chairs are great when it comes to bringing life to a previously dull and boring room, especially if it’s a living area, a bedroom, or another type of space such as a hallway. Accent chairs, big and small, can liven up any area, and if you find a good one, it definitely makes a difference. But selecting the right one takes some careful consideration; there are many factors you should think about, including the size of the chair, the available space, your home’s theme, and so on. Here, then, is your step-by-step guide to choosing an accent chair for your space.

Step 1: Decide on its purpose

The first step is to consider the chair’s purpose. Where do you want to place the chair? Is it your master bedroom, a guest bedroom, a family area or living area, or a hallway? Chairs which are placed in areas with less traffic (such as hallways) can be more of a decorative element, whilst chairs in a well-trafficked area such as a living area or master bedroom need to be more practical and functional. You also want to consider who is using the chair. If you have children or pets, then you want a chair that’s able to withstand lots of wear and tear as well.

Step 2: Decide on its placement

Whilst accent chairs often make a statement about your theme and personality, you should also make sure that it doesn’t clutter the space or make it too constricted. The placement of the chair matters. For instance, if you would like to place an accent chair in your family room or living area, you can add one or two chairs facing inwards and place them on either side of a sofa. You can also place modern chairs in a corner and next to a window, especially if you would like to create a cozy reading nook. If you know from the start where you want to place the accent chair, this will also help you decide on the style of the chair and its size.

Step 3: Think of the size

The size of your space or area will often determine the size of your chair, but along with this comes the width and height of the other furniture in the room. Aside from thinking about the size of the chair, think about the base of the chair as well as its leg width. If tall people are going to use the chair, you may want one which features more leg room. If you want a chair to read and curl up in, select a chair that’s wide and deep so you are entirely comfortable.

Step 4: Choose the material

There are many materials or fabrics from which you can choose, but before you decide on the fabric, think about who will use it and how. Some materials, like velvet or suede, may not work well if you have children or pets, for instance. Microfibre is also a good choice if you want something that’s not as easily stained as leather.

Step 5: Choose the style

Next is the chair’s style. Chair styles are highly varied, so think about what you would like in the room or area. Are you looking for a chair that’s sleek and stylish, or something bigger and cosier? Classic styles include roomy chairs with arms and deep seats, whilst you can also go for a wingback accent chair which can help you achieve the right balance in a room with a big couch. You can also opt for slipper chairs, swivel chairs, and other iconic styles and designs.

  • This guide is helpful! The chair we currently use as an accent chair in our living space is much too big and doesn’t serve much of a purpose because it is a rocking style.
