So…. your usual budget has been majorly slashed since the arrival of the tiny person in your life and you’re constantly surrounded by adverts of what are must have/buys to ensure you give your offspring the best in everything at all times! Welcome to parenting life! One decision to make (alongside lots of other ones) are sleep systems and beds. What do you buy for your little one to sleep on and how does this adapt and change as your child develops and grows? We’re looking at sleep solutions post cot days and how you find that much sought after perfect night’s sleep for toddlers and kids.

Buying a new kids mattress can be slightly more complicated than you might think but with this article hopefully we can enlighten you to choices available.  Some considerations to make are: to research

Is it well built enough to encourage healthy posture and support growing bones?

Is it comfy enough to spend between ten and 14 hours a night on?

If it’s for a top bunk, does it meet the legal requirements in terms of weight and thickness?

It’s a good idea to get your child to test it first in a showroom to get their seal of approval if they’re a bit older. These are just some of the things you need to consider but may give you some starting points.

You can buy cheap children’s mattresses online easily, but you can find that they can be often poorly constructed and lack depth when they arrive. It’s a good idea to visit an actual store so you can test out/feel the quality and know what you are purchasing. Another consideration are bed toppers to ensure an even cozier sleep for your child and these can be a great addition to the new bed.

Is memory foam or pocket springs better?

Good question! And it definitely depends on your personal preference.

The right mattress for you depends on your individual needs. When deciding on a mattress, here are a few important things to think about:

Heat.

If your child is prone to overheating, memory foam could make this worse.

Movement.

If your little one tends to move around a lot during the night, a pocket sprung mattress will be more accommodating to these extra wriggles.

Durability.

Memory foam mattresses are generally considered more durable than pocket sprung options.

Support.

You’re likely to find memory foam more supportive.

Feel.

Firm memory foam? Or bouncy springs? Which you prefer is entirely up to you and comes down to how you like to sleep, again testing out options is quite useful for an older child.
