Keeping Cooking Fumes Under Control With the AMZCHEF Portable Range Hood

Cooking fish is something I do pretty often, but there is one part of it I could definitely do without: the smoke and cooking fumes that seem to find their way beyond the kitchen.

Over time, I started noticing that those fumes weren’t necessarily staying around the stove. They would travel into our living area, and eventually you could even notice that slightly greasy feeling on furniture and other surfaces. With kids in my home, I especially don’t like having smoke traveling throughout the house while I’m cooking.

A Portable Range Hood That Fits Easily Into Your Cooking Space

One of the first things I noticed about this unit was its size. It’s actually bigger than I expected, yet it still has a compact enough footprint that it doesn’t take over the cooking area.

The base measures approximately 10.2 x 8 inches, and because there is no permanent installation involved, I can place it where I need it near the stove and move it when I’m finished. It’s compact enough to move when needed, not particularly heavy, and doesn’t require adding another permanent appliance to the kitchen.

That portability is one of the things I like most about it. A traditional range hood stays exactly where it was installed. This one can be positioned closer to the source of the smoke.

The base is also designed to stay steady once the hood is positioned beside your cooking area. That’s especially helpful when you’re frying or stir frying and there’s already plenty happening around the stove.

The Fume Capture Shield Helps Keep Smoke From Escaping

The detachable front fume capture shield isn’t there just for appearance. Its purpose is to help catch the oil smoke coming from your cookware and direct it toward the filters rather than allowing it to immediately escape into the room.

That’s especially important when I’m cooking fish, seafood or anything that produces a lot of smoke. I want the fumes moving toward the filtration system instead of drifting toward the living room.

Placing the hood close to the cooking area makes a noticeable difference for me. It doesn’t mean that absolutely nothing can escape while you’re cooking, but it helps keep much more of it concentrated around the kitchen and stove area.

Adjust the Hood to Match What You’re Cooking

I also really like the adjustable height. Not every pan, pot or cooking situation is the same, so being able to change the position of the hood makes much more sense than having one fixed height.

The upgraded adjustable arm extends approximately 72mm vertically and can tilt 40 degrees, from -20 degrees to +20 degrees. It is designed to accommodate cookware up to approximately 12 inches tall.

That means you can bring the hood closer to where the fumes are actually coming from whether you’re using a frying pan, wok, pot, or tabletop grill. Getting that positioning right can help the hood capture smoke before it has an opportunity to spread.

Four Fan Speeds Give You More Control

There are four fan speeds, and even at the lowest setting I was impressed by the amount of suction.

I don’t necessarily need the strongest setting every time I cook. Something simmering on the stove obviously doesn’t create the same amount of smoke as frying fish or searing food at a higher temperature.

That’s why having four speeds is useful. I can adjust the ventilation based on what I’m actually cooking rather than having the fan either completely off or running at full power.

The maximum setting can run continuously when stronger ventilation is needed, which is especially helpful during heavier frying, stir frying, or other high heat cooking.

It Filters the Air Without an Outside Vent

One of the more interesting things about this AMZCHEF Portable Range Hood design is that it doesn’t need to vent through a wall or outside the house.

The second generation filtration system uses large dual carbon filters to help filter cooking fumes before recirculating the filtered air back into the room, with airflow rated at up to 120 CFM.

That’s a big part of what makes the unit portable. You don’t need ductwork or a permanent exhaust opening. You position it where you need it, plug it in and use it while you’re cooking.

The hood also comes with 10 replacement filter cotton pads, so you have extras available as the filters need maintenance or replacement.

There’s a Light Right Where You Need It

Another feature I wasn’t necessarily looking for but appreciate is the dimmable ring light.

Because the unit sits close to the actual cooking area, the light can illuminate the pan or pot directly instead of relying completely on the overhead kitchen lighting.

The brightness can be adjusted, which is useful when you want some extra visibility without having an unnecessarily bright light shining across the kitchen.

Powerful Without Taking Over the Kitchen With Noise

A portable exhaust fan wouldn’t be nearly as convenient if using it meant listening to an extremely loud motor every time you cooked.

The AMZCHEF Portable Range Hood operates at under 63dB. In everyday use, I can have it working beside the stove without feeling like the fan itself has taken over the room.

That matters in our home because the kitchen isn’t isolated from everything else. When family members are nearby, I still want to be able to have a conversation or hear what’s happening around me while I’m cooking.

Cleaning the Range Hood Is Pretty Straightforward

Anything designed to capture grease and cooking fumes is eventually going to need cleaning, so I also paid attention to how much work maintaining this one would involve.

The stainless steel filter screen is removable and dishwasher safe. It’s designed to resist heat, grease, stains and rust, and being able to remove the filter makes regular cleaning much easier than trying to wipe around a permanently installed screen.

The detachable design also makes it easier to get into the areas where cooking residue naturally collects.

More Than Just Another Kitchen Gadget

I initially looked at this as another way to help with smoke while cooking, but after using it, I can see the usefulness going beyond just my kitchen.

If you live in a smaller home or apartment, cook in an RV, use a tabletop grill, enjoy indoor hot pot or simply have a kitchen where cooking odors tend to travel everywhere, having ventilation that can be moved directly beside the cooking area makes a lot of sense.

For me, though, the real test is fish.

I cook it often enough to know what happens when those fumes make their way out of the kitchen. Having the AMZCHEF Portable Range Hood beside my stove gives me another layer of ventilation in addition to the exhaust fan I already have.

I like being able to position it close to the pan, adjust the height, choose the fan speed and let it start pulling in fumes right where they’re being produced.

It’s compact enough to move around, powerful enough that I notice the suction even on the lower setting, and practical enough that I can see myself reaching for it regularly.

Most importantly, I’m not watching nearly as much cooking smoke make its way from my kitchen into the rest of the house. For a household with an open living area, that’s the part that makes this portable range hood worth having around.
