What is Malaria?

Malaria is a deadly disease that causes by a parasite that infects a specific type of mosquito. These mosquitos are known as Anopheles mosquitoes. Besides, only female mosquitos can spread this disease. A small bite from these mosquitos can infect you with malaria. When a mosquito bites someone, it drinks blood from that person. This blood contains the malaria parasites. So, if the mosquito bites some other person, that second person gets infected with malaria. And that is how the malaria disease spreads.

If the climate is perfect for malaria to grow, this disease can wreak havoc in any part of the globe. The CDC has a list on its website related to the hotspots of malaria. So, if you are planning to travel, it is wise to check that list. Otherwise, you will end up in a malaria hotspot without even knowing it.

Apart from the above symptoms, some patients show anaemia and jaundice symptoms. These two conditions occur due to a lack of red blood cells. You can identify these conditions by the colour of your skin and eyes; they become yellow.

Types of Malaria

There are five different kinds of plasmodium parasites that can cause trouble for humans. Among those parasites, two kinds are considered deadly. Here are some details about those two kinds.

  1. falciparum: This type is the most widely spread malaria parasite. Besides, it causes more human deaths than other malaria parasites. Apart from that, these parasites can multiply at an alarming pace.
  2. vivax: This is the second most dangerous malaria parasite in the world. It can lie silently in your body for months before infecting you.
