Wow, can you believe summer is here already! Since the weather has become warmer I believe that it’s time for us to get the kids out and active! It seems as if they don’t spend as much time outdoors anymore with all these gadgets out now.

I can remember back when I was growing up how much we stayed outdoors! All of our time was spent going to the parks and zoo, or go in front of the house and play “Red Light, Green Light” and more! We weren’t like the kids of today where TV and gadgets dominated their lives.

This generation just doesn’t get it, they don’t understand how important it is to play outdoors. Thus, this weekend I took Qunicy to our favorite community park; he loves the  outdoors and enjoys going each time. I enjoy it as well: I love the bonding time. Especially since we don’t get to see each other that much.

I adored how we use to have playtime with other children in our area untill we moved. Once a weekend many of us parents would meet at the park and watch all the kids play and laugh while the adults had their time!

We even packed snacks for every one to enjoy even the kids and parents we didn’t know joined in.  Wow, that was so much fun, I definitely would recommend joining a group like that if you have small kids.

I know many of us parents work daily; however, I would recommend that we focus on getting our kids outdoors more. That and getting them out on the playground,  so they can meet new kids and have fun. Hey, playing on a playground shouldn’t stop when you get older! Even now I still love to swing and slide! Plus, I enjoy seeing the smile on Qunicy’s face when I do those things.

Therefore, I pose this question to you… Will you take away those gadgets, and allow your child to enjoy playing at the playground? Now listen, as the school year ends and summertime approaches, kids will find themselves with much more free time on their hands.  Televisions, computers and cell phones will taunt them to stay indoors, which is why International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) and the Voice of Play want to promote activities and ideas that get kids – and parents – outside.  What better way to do this than by celebrating the beginning of summer with a trip to the local playground?

The “Voice of Play” is an education and advocacy initiative of the non-profit membership association, IPEMA, formed to educate and promote the benefits of children’s free outdoor play and playgrounds. Through the Voice of Play website and social media properties, IPEMA highlights the scientifically proven physical, social, emotional and cognitive benefits of play.

  • Love this article. My girls love playing outdoors and i’m so glad that they appreciate the outdoors just as much as I did when I was a child. They love their electronics too and sometimes it can be a chore to tear my youngest away. Not this summer, we’re getting out and going to play!
