What Is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a system of alternative medicine based on holistic and natural principles. It is an ancient medical system that has been used in India for over 5,000 years.

It’s based on the concept that all living beings are composed of five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine to form three doshas: Vata (space), pitta (fire), and Kapha (water). The combination of these different doshas determines one’s health condition and personality traits.

The goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to keep everything in balance by eating foods or taking herbal treatments with opposite qualities to the imbalance. For example, if someone has a pitta (fire) imbalance, they may be prescribed an herbal paste of sandalwood and Chandan that’s applied on the forehead and throat, which will cool down the body.

In regard to hair loss or thinning hair, there are several different imbalances that can cause this problem, and more often than not it involves a combination of two or three doshas: Vata (air and space), pitta (fire), and Kapha (water). Vata is responsible for dryness in the scalp; Pitta is responsible for inflammation; Kapha is responsible for oiliness in the scalp.
