Surely you will have heard before how you aren’t supposed to watch TV or even use your laptop in bed. You shouldn’t have any caffeine after a certain hour, you shouldn’t exercise in the evening, and the like. You might be adhering to all of those things and still not be able to get a good night’s sleep. If you have trouble with sleeping, check out the unexpected sleep snatchers on this list. It might even be one or two of your more healthy habits that are keeping you from spending the time you need in dreamland.

Mattress

You can easily buy a mattress at that feels nice and comfy when you initially lay down on it. However, it might not have the support that is necessary. This is what happens with many soft, cheap mattresses and this can result in a situation that can actually cause harm to your spine, and as a result, to your overall health. It is critical that a mattress provide the proper amount of support. This can be discovered prior to purchase by visiting a local mattress store to test options out first. It needs to maintain the basic curves in the spine and to be able to make sure that those four primary curves remain in alignment. If you have a mattress that is either too soft or too hard, you won’t be able to get a good night’s sleep and you might just be causing harm to your back.

Lemon Lover?

Having a cup of tea with a lemon wedge might sound like just the thing to send you off to dreamland. However, it might just work against you getting to sleep. The smell of lemons, and other types of citrus fruits, can actually boost your mental stimulation while increasing your levels of energy. This is just the opposite of what you need when you are trying to get to sleep. If you want to get to sleep quickly, try skipping the lemon and try not to wash your sheets with detergents that are lemony fresh. Also, if you are a fan of tea, try some nice chamomile tea. This tea doesn’t have any caffeine and it can actually help to calm you down before bed. Chamomile tea also has glycine in it and this can work to make you more at ease while also giving you a slight sleepy feeling, which makes it a great thing to try if you have trouble sleeping at night.

Light

We are creatures of the night when it comes to sleep. If we are exposed to light, we won’t sleep well. You should always turn your lights down or off at least an hour before you go to sleep. Electronics should be turned off then too. This is one way that you can try to cure your insomnia.

Eating Inconsistently

If you manage to have a well balanced dinner most of the time but occasionally find yourself indulging in late night burritos or happy hour, you might be damaging more than just your normal diet. Studies have shown that eating habits later in the day that are inconsistent can have a negative effect on your sleep. It is alright to eat your meal later in the day, as long as it is a practice that you stick to every day. If you don’t, then skip it and go right to sleep. When you want to get a good night’s sleep, it is important to be consistent.

Minty Fresh Breath

You know that you need to brush your teeth every night before you go to bed. However, you might want to experiment with a new toothpaste. Research has suggested that the smell of peppermint can be a stimulant to the brain, which can make you feel like you are even more awake. Try a different flavor, like bubblegum or strawberry.

Smoking

Yes, smoking a cigarette can calm your nerves, but it won’t really help you get ready for bed. Nicotine is a stimulant, which means that it will make it more difficult for you to sleep after having a cigarette. If you can’t give them up completely, try to avoid having a cigarette for at least an hour and a half before you go to bed.
