6 Things to Do on a Broome Holiday With Your Family
Among the many vacation spots all over Western Australia, you can’t go wrong with the colorful getaway of Broome. Situated in the Kimberley region along the Indian Ocean, Broome is a natural wonder filled with dramatic sunsets and gorgeous views. It’s indeed one of the best places to visit with your family, especially if you’re an adventurous bunch.
For those planning a family vacation, read on for some of the best places to visit during your Broome holidays. These provide a variety of places and activities that are fun, educational, and beautiful—everything needed to delight your whole family.
Gantheaume Point
Are your kids fascinated with dinosaurs? Then Broome is the perfect destination! Specifically, you should head over to the south end of Cable Beach to Gantheaume Point. Considered one of the world’s best paleontological sites, Gantheaume Point is known for its 130-million-year-old dinosaur trails. If you can, time your visit to coincide with the low tide so you can actually see the trails. If not, you can check out the plaster casts of the original gigantic footprints at the top of the cliff. While you’re there, you can also head on up to the Gantheaume Point Lighthouse to watch dolphins and whales.
Broome Bird Observatory
For bird lovers, Broome has the perfect spot: the Broome Bird Observatory. Established in 1988, the observatory is located along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. This makes it a prime location to observe migratory shore birds. The best times to visit are between August to October when the birds have just arrived, up until March or April. While you’re there, you’re guaranteed to see a flurry of colorful feathers and a variety of unique species.
Cable Beach
Families who love the sun, sand, and sea will definitely enjoy Broome’s Cable Beach. It boasts 22 kilometers of pure white sand that’s complemented with clear blue waters and red cliffs in the background. Indeed, Cable Beach is a picturesque dream. You can swim, lay around and play in the sand, or explore the beach and its surrounding areas for more activities. Those who love culture and history, will love the cultural walk through the dunes. There’s also a self-guided tour so you can go at your own pace. Meanwhile, there’s also the camel safari, 4WD rides through the beach roads, and excellent fishing opportunities.
Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tour
Broome has a thriving, decades-old pearling industry, giving it the nickname “The Pearl of the North.” One of the best sites to know more about modern pearl farming is the award-winning Willie Creek Pearl Farm. They produce some of the finest pearls in the world, which can reach sizes of up to 20 millimeters. (You can also purchase pearls, if you like!) The tours last about 4 hours, which include either breakfast or lunch.
Staircase to the Moon
In Roebuck Bay, you can find arguably the most beautiful attraction in Broome: the Staircase to the Moon. The gorgeous vista happens when the moon rises over the mudflats on the bay, which creates the illusion of a staircase. This happens from March to October for only two days each month, as it requires specific conditions to be visible. And while waiting for the event, you can check out the red sand beaches and the surrounding woods.
Sun Picture Gardens
Built in 1913, the Sun Picture Gardens is the world’s oldest outdoor cinema. It’s located in Chinatown (which is an attraction itself) and screens multiple films each night. Don’t worry about the selections, however. The Sun Picture Gardens has recently updated its library with the latest flicks and family favorites. You can choose to sit on the canvas deck chairs or you can also bring blankets or picnic mats so you can sit in front of the screen. You can also bring your own food or purchase some cinema staples like popcorn and soda on-site.
