ZyXel Extended My Knowledge Review
ZyXel Communications have opened my eyes to a world of safeguarding my home and extending our internet access. I was pleased to see that it was available to myself as a consumer and not just those who own businesses or those in the government sector.
I received two products, one i was so excited about and the other I was so scared to even think about. But, opening the boxes, I was thinking, How hard could this really be? I have basic knowledge about these things. I’m educated. I know about electronics. I know more than my husband. In fact, when things are purchased, I’m the one who sets them up, takes them down, deals with them when they stop working. I can do this! Oh, how wrong I was!
First time in the history of my life I had to call tech support to set up a product. I was so frustrated. But, I will admit. The nice man on the other end of the line was very pleasant. He was patient and spent 45 minutes helping me get this firewall installed in my house, making sure it worked.

Holy Moly!!! This thing WORKS!!!!! I have full capabilities upstairs, which I haven’t had before. I have wifi in my kitchen and even outside. I have a wireless router and have had limited access, but my phone’s internet service normally kicks on and it uses my data from my plan mostly in my house, which actually defeats the purpose of paying for home internet service. But now, I can use what I pay for in my whole house.
Now, I will tell you if you are going to purchase ZyXel’s Range Extender, save yourself a lot of frustration and use the provided cord, plug it into the device and your router. The instructions provided were not clear, citing a website that wasn’t complete. Once I figured out that plugging in the cord to the router and the extender was the easy way to do it instead of trying to do it wirelessly, it took like two minutes and the router and extender did all the work. Easy Peasy!
Let’s talk about what an actual firewall does. They basically stop stuff from coming and going (you can set it up to your own specifications). Example: when your boss doesn’t want you going on Facebook while your supposed to be writing a report for him, he sets up his firewall to stop it. It stops hackers from coming into your computer unknowingly and taking your personal information, which is really a HUGE concern to most people, especially with the bank and store breaches these days. They can also be used to set up internal internets for companies, among other things. This product protects your home from the inside out from cyber attacks.
ZyXel’s Firewall is the reason I had to call tech support. Although a very nice experience overall, I was disappointed I couldn’t set it up myself, out of the box with the given instructions. They just weren’t clear. However, this firewall is pretty neat, as far as tech gear goes. There is a dashboard set up where you can see all sorts of data for your specific firewall. It tells you things like how many times it blocks, what portals in the firewall is being accessed, what times they are accessed…it’s something right out of 007!
