When It Rains, It Pours

We all love it when the summer sunshine rolls in, but the worst thing about the summer months is that we all get complacent! Just because the sun is shining today, doesn’t mean that tomorrow there won’t be a huge storm dumping load after load of rain onto the streets and worse: your home. Protecting your home from all the rain is so important, and there are many people out there that forget that they should be protecting their house as well as preparing their garden from inclement weather.

Luckily, most houses are now prepared for the huge downfalls of rain that come down even when we least expect it. There are plenty of places to get advice about the adverse reactions that homes have to wet weather, such as this informative web site for water damage issues. As a homeowner, you have to do what you can to prepare your home properly so that you’re not paying out thousands to fix the issues that crop up. So, how can you hold back the flood when the rains descend?

  1. Gutters. A house cannot prepare for rainfall with gutters full of animal nests and debris. Throughout the year, the gutters around the top of a house fill with leaves, sticks, blown rubbish from the wind and even sludge and mud. Twice a year, you should be clearing these gutters out properly to ensure that the build up is moved to allow for proper water flow.
  2. Sealed. Edging around the house that requires sealant should be touched up to ensure that gaps and cracks aren’t allowing water to come right through and cause damp. Stopping the rains from seeping in will mean less cash spent on repairs from the damage it would cause.
  3. Attic. You should check your attic twice a year to ensure that you can’t see any light flowing through the roof. The last thing that you need is to have water leaking through your home via the attic, making your insulation damp and damaged. You should have a roofer come out to fix the tiles while the weather is dry.
  4. Sockets. Plug sockets and outlets should always be raised by an electrician if your home is prone to water damage. It can mean the difference as to whether you will need any rewiring later, which will cost you a lot more money than you need to spend.
  5. Walls. Keeping an eye on your walls in your home is important. The floors and carpets may take the brunt of your water damage when there’s a gap in the sealant, but your walls can do the same. Keep an eye out for bubbling wallpaper and wet patches on paintwork and you can get it sorted sooner than later.

Your home is going to be battered by the elements from all angles, and it’s up to you to ensure that you don’t have to do too many repairs by keeping an eye on the many ways that the climate can affect your house.
