Top 5 Tips to Keep Your Dogs Teeth in Good Condition

Canine companions can bring boundless joy into many people’s lives, and as responsible pet owners, it is your duty to ensure their overall well-being in every aspect. One often overlooked aspect of a dog’s health is their dental hygiene. Just like humans, dogs require proper dental hygiene care to offset nasty issues, such as gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. Here are five effective tips to keep your dog’s teeth in prime condition, promoting oral health and overall well-being.

1.   Brush Up on Your Brushing Basics

Brushing your dog’s teeth is a fundamental yet often neglected practice when it comes to canine dental care. Regular teeth brushing helps remove plaque and prevents the formation of tartar. This can have a significant effect on the overall health of your dog’s teeth and gums. Invest in a canine toothbrush and dog toothpaste to do the job. Avoid human products as they may contain harmful ingredients for dogs. Start slow to allow your furry friend to get accustomed to the process. When brushing, aim for a gentle, circular motion.

2.   Dental-Friendly Toys

Not all playthings are created equal when it comes to promoting dental health in dogs. Choose toys designed to support oral hygiene, such as chew toys with ribbed or slightly spiked edges. These toys are crafted to reduce plaque and tartar buildup and can provide entertainment for your canine companion. Not only do these types of toys satisfy your dog’s natural urge to chew, but they can also contribute to stronger gums and teeth. Ensure the dental toys are appropriate for your dog’s size and chewing habits to prevent any potential choking hazards.

  1. Dental Check-ups

Just like humans, dogs benefit from dental check-ups. A professional vet can identify and address potential issues before they escalate. Salt Water Animal Hospital is a reputable veterinarian that provides an array of services for dogs. You can find a list of their services on their website, saltwateranimalhospital.com. Schedule appointments with your veterinarian to assess your dog’s dental health, as well as their regular health. Professional cleanings may be recommended to address stubborn tartar and ensure a clean slate for ongoing dental care at home. Your vet can also offer guidance on specific dental concerns based on your dog’s breed and individual characteristics.

  1. Balanced Diet for Dental Health

Nutrition plays a major part in helping you maintain your dog’s overall health and dental well-being. Consider incorporating high-quality dog food that promotes dental health, such as kibble designed to reduce tartar. Additionally, consider adding crunchy vegetables like carrots or apples to their diet, as the natural chewing action helps clean teeth. Speak to your veterinarian to determine the most suitable diet plan for Fido’s needs. They can help you with factors such as their breed, age, and any existing dental concerns.

  1. Supplements

Supplement your dog’s oral care routine with products designed to promote dental health. For instance, ProDen PlaqueOff Powder is a recommended food additive that is made from kelp. It is designed to remove tartar and prevent new plaque from forming.

  • I need to take my Yorkie to get his teeth cleaned. I’ve managed to keep his back teeth cleaner but his canines are getting bad. Dental health is super important. I’ll have to schedule him an appointment soon. Hopefully, he won’t need any more teeth pulled but I’m afraid his canines on the top will go soon. My baby is 9 so teeth problems are more prevalent especially in little dogs.
