It’s safe to say as parents, we all want a family that’s healthy and happy. When our children are young, it’s our responsibility to teach them about living a healthy lifestyle and why it’s crucial.  

When you instill positive choices when they’re young, it’s more likely your kids will be in good shape as adults. We’re going to go over some of our tips to keep your family on top of their game.

Go to the Doctors Regularly

When you have children, you have to make it a point to take them to the doctor’s office for physicals at least once a year. Even if you think your child is entirely healthy, doctors are professionals and can see things parents simply cannot. 

For example, if your child is not growing at the same rate as others in their age group, it can be linked to a bigger problem. You might think they’re a perfect size, but they could have a growth hormone deficiency. 

This can be caused by a brain tumor, diseases connected with the hypothalamus, or an autoimmune condition. You’ll never know about these severe medical conditions if you don’t take your children to the doctors. 

Having a health insurance plan that covers regular checkups and specialist visits will help you give your family the assistance they need without creating a substantial financial burden. 

Eat Balanced Meals Together 

A growing child needs quality nutrients to grow strong. You need to prioritize providing your children with fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains at every meal. As an adult, you’re the one who’s deciding what goes into their body, so you need to make it healthy. 

If you have a house full of picky eaters, there are secrets to getting your children thinking they’re eating something fun. Allow them to be your helper in the kitchen. When children assist in making a meal, they’re more likely to eat it. 

You can also make broccoli into a tree forest, sandwiches into smiley faces with some simple cuts, or make green eggs and ham, just like their favorite Dr. Seuss book. When the food is fun, your little one will forget that they’re eating vegetables and think they got a real treat. 

However, we suggest a balanced meal, so don’t be afraid to give your children something sweet or unhealthy once in a while. Those times when you get ice cream on a summer night will be more meaningful and exciting for them. It will teach them about moderation.

Get Active Together

We live in a time where technology, television, and smartphones consume our lives. Excess use of electronics has a negative physical effect on children. When they stay inside and use their devices, children are at higher risk of stomach issues, obesity, and sleeping problems. 

Instead, you should make an effort to get you and the family active once a day. This can be going for a walk together with the dog, kicking a soccer ball around, or taking them to the local playground. 

You’ll love seeing your child run around and laugh. You’ll create great memories that they’ll remember their whole lives. 

Talk to Them About Feelings 

As much as physical fitness and weight are essential to overall well being, mental health is also a significant factor. When children know they can trust you, they’re more likely to open up about their issues, and you’ll build a strong relationship. 

Make a point to sit down with your child daily and ask them how their day was. Teach them about their emotions and positive ways to express themselves. As parents, sometimes we forget that your child is a little person with wants and needs just like the rest of us. 

When you act irrationally because you’re frustrated, you need to sit them down and apologize. Set an example of explaining your feelings and owning up to your actions. Then, when your children act out, you’ll have these conversations to build a healthy relationship.

Practice Good Hygiene 

Poor hygiene is linked with many adverse health conditions, including lice, tooth decay, respiratory problems, rashes, ear infections, ringworm, and chronic diarrhea. None of these should be welcomed into your home. 

As the parent, you need to make sure your home is clean to avoid dust, mold, or bacterial build-up. When your children start to get older, give them small tasks to help keep things fresh. 

Teaching your children handwashing skills is also vital for good hygiene. Children play outside, put their hands in their mouth, and probably touch things they’re not supposed to. When they know how to wash their hands, it reduces the risk of them getting sick. 

You need to bathe your child at least every other day. It will keep them feeling good and will reduce the risk of rashes, infections, and lice. It’s also important to teach your children to brush, floss, and rinse twice a day to avoid tooth decay or other dental problems.
