How to Use a Humidifier

Most people get sidelined by two colds a year when the cold weather strikes. One way to combat the sniffles is by using a humidifier to put moisture back into the air in your home.

Dry air in a room makes it harder to breathe and can cause your sinuses to become inflamed. A humidifier adds back this moisture and soothes dry noses and throats.

If you are wondering how to use a humidifier, it’s easier than you may think. Follow our humidifier guide to be on your way to easier breathing.

What Is a Humidifier?

Humidifiers are machines that get filled with water and are plugged into an outlet to use. Before buying a humidifier, you’ll need to figure out which one is best for your needs.

Central humidifiers are a great choice if your entire house needs more moisture. Impeller humidifiers use cool mist and are a good option for people with kids. Steam vaporizers are more eco-friendly but release warmer vapor into the air.

Setting up Your Humidifier

Each humidifier is different, so the first thing you’ll want to do is break out the instruction manual. Read it over to ensure you are setting your device up correctly.

Your humidifier may need some light assembly. Attach any wheels or other parts before plugging it in.

Now is the time to make sure you understand the different settings on your humidifier. You will want to set your humidifier between 30% and 50% humidity. Any humidity level above 50% can encourage bacteria or cause wall condensation.

Before using the reservoir, clean it out with mild soap and warm water. You’ll want to do this twice a week to keep your humidifier germ free.

You’ll now need to add water to the reservoir. Look at the instructions to know what type of water your humidifier uses. Some humidifiers use tap water, and some use distilled water.

Positioning Your Humidifier

You’re going to want to be strategic with where you set your humidifier up. Place your humidifier twelve inches from any walls on a flat surface. This will keep moisture from building up and causing damage.

Humidifier Tips

You should only use a humidifier when you are in a room. For your safety, make sure to turn it off whenever you leave.

Check to see if there is a spot to add essential oils to your humidifier. If this is an option, the extra scent can be soothing to scratchy throats and stuffy noses.

If you haven’t used your humidifier in a while, give it a thorough cleaning before you use it. The wet environment makes it a breeding ground for bacteria build-up.
