Hartz for the Holidays – Perfect Puppy Treats and Toys
Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. However, I did receive products from the company for review purposes. All opinions expressed in this post are 100 percent my own.
When you line up the stockings along the fireplace mantel for the holidays, do you include stockings for your dogs and cats? In our household, our pets have always been considered part of the family. That means they are included in our holiday traditions, family celebrations, and, of course, our holiday gift giving.
Shopping for pets during the holidays can be a lot of fun. There are plenty of colorful toys, treats, gift baskets, and stocking stuffers available, but I still prefer choosing products from a familiar pet care company. When selecting something our pets will chew, eat, or carry around the house, I want to know more about the company behind it.
Hartz has been a recognizable name in pet care for generations. The company offers products for dogs and cats, including toys, chews, grooming supplies, training products, wellness essentials, and other items designed to help families care for their pets.
My dogs had the opportunity to try several Hartz products during the holiday season, including a Dura Play toy and Oinkies dog chews. We also received a Delectables product, which is part of Hartz’s selection of wet treats and food toppers for cats.
As you can probably imagine, the dogs were immediately interested when the packages arrived. They may not understand the holidays or why gifts are placed beneath a tree, but they certainly recognize the sound of a treat bag opening.

Including Our Pets in the Holiday Celebration
The holidays are often filled with visitors, food, decorations, music, and changes to the household routine. While all that excitement can be enjoyable for us, it may also be overwhelming for some pets. Giving dogs their own toys and treats can help keep them occupied while the rest of the family opens gifts, prepares dinner, or welcomes guests.
I like the idea of putting together a simple pet stocking rather than purchasing a ready-made holiday package containing products we may never use. A few thoughtfully selected toys, treats, grooming products, or other practical items can make a useful and enjoyable gift.
For dogs, a holiday stocking might contain a new ball, chew toy, training treats, waste bags, a brush, or a festive bandana. Cat owners could include small toys, a grooming tool, or a few packages of Hartz Delectables.
Of course, treats should always be selected according to the pet’s age, size, dietary needs, and chewing habits. It is also important to read the package instructions and supervise pets while they enjoy chews or toys.
Oinkies Dog Chews Were a Huge Hit in My House
My dogs went crazy when I opened the first package of Oinkies. Their reaction was similar to what happens whenever they hear a treat bag, but these chews required them to slow down and spend some time chewing instead of swallowing a small treat almost immediately.
Some days, I am not completely convinced that my dogs even taste the smaller treats I give them. One moment the treat is in my hand, and the next moment it has disappeared. A chew that encourages them to settle down and take their time provides a very different experience.
Hartz describes Oinkies as long-lasting dog treats made with layers of real ingredients and without beef rawhide. The collection now includes several sizes, textures, shapes, and flavor combinations, allowing owners to select an option that better matches their dog’s size and chewing style.
I liked having this type of treat available when the dogs needed something to keep them occupied. They were especially useful on busy days when we were moving between the house, garage, and yard. They could also be helpful when company arrives, particularly when you have an enthusiastic dog that believes every visitor has come specifically to see them.
Although the Oinkies we received had a smoked aroma, I did not find the smell overwhelmingly strong. That was important because some dog chews can leave a powerful odor throughout the room.
The dogs seemed satisfied with the treats and remained interested in them. As with any edible chew, I supervised them and made sure each dog had an appropriately sized product. Dogs can have very different chewing habits, even when they live in the same home, so supervision is always important.
Selecting an Appropriate Oinkies Chew
Hartz offers an assortment of Oinkies products, including lighter chews, twists, ribs, kabobs, and other varieties. The product packaging includes information that can help owners choose an appropriate option.
A chew should be large enough that the dog cannot easily swallow it whole. Pet owners should also consider whether their dog is a gentle, moderate, or powerful chewer. A product that lasts a long time for one dog may only last a few minutes for another.
Hartz advises pet owners to supervise dogs while they are eating treats and to choose a size slightly larger than the dog’s mouth. The company also recommends discarding any unfinished Oinkies chew within the same day rather than leaving it out indefinitely.
Owners should review the ingredient panel and feeding directions on the specific package because ingredients, serving recommendations, and calorie counts can vary between products. Anyone with questions about a dog’s diet, allergies, or health should consult a veterinarian before introducing a new treat.
Our Experience With the Hartz Dura Play Toys
For the sake of my sanity, I normally do not purchase many dog toys containing squeakers. My dogs become extremely excited by the noise, and once they discover a squeaker, they often make it their mission to locate and remove it.
When they realized that the Hartz Dura Play toys squeaked, they immediately started running through the house with them. What followed can best be described as a lively round of dog rugby. They chased one another, carried the toys from room to room, and tried to claim them from each other.
The toys certainly captured their attention. The soft exterior made them easy to carry, and the squeaking sound kept the dogs interested. Hartz currently describes its Dura Play collection as soft and flexible natural latex toys made for dogs of different ages.
However, my dogs are extremely determined chewers. Unfortunately, their fun only lasted about fifteen minutes before they damaged the outer latex coating and began exposing the foam interior. At that point, I immediately removed the toys so they could not chew or swallow any loose material.
This does not necessarily mean the toys will have the same result with every dog. My dogs have destroyed toys marketed for strong chewers, so their experience is not typical of every household. The Dura Play toys may be better suited for dogs that enjoy chasing, retrieving, squeaking, and carrying their toys without immediately trying to tear them apart.
For gentle or moderate players, the toys could provide plenty of interactive fun. For persistent shredders, owners should supervise play closely and remove the toy as soon as it becomes torn or damaged.

Choosing Toys According to Your Dog’s Play Style
One lesson I have learned after living with multiple dogs is that no toy is right for every pet. Some dogs prefer carrying plush toys, while others enjoy retrieving balls. Some want an interactive tug toy, and others are happiest when they can settle down with something to chew.
Before purchasing a new toy, consider how your dog normally plays. A dog that gently carries toys around the house may enjoy a soft latex or plush toy for a long time. A dog that immediately begins tearing at seams or biting repeatedly in one location may need a toy specifically designed for more aggressive chewing.
The size of the toy is equally important. It should be large enough that it cannot become lodged in the dog’s mouth or swallowed. Toys should also be inspected regularly for cracks, missing pieces, exposed filling, damaged squeakers, or loose material.
No dog toy is completely indestructible. Even a toy that has lasted for months can eventually become worn. Supervised play gives owners an opportunity to step in before a damaged toy becomes a safety concern.
The current Hartz dog toy collection includes products intended for different activities, including chewing, tossing, retrieving, and interactive play. Looking through the available categories can make it easier to choose something that matches your dog’s personality and play habits.
Delectables Treats for the Cats in the Family
Although our dogs were the main product testers for this particular review, Hartz also offers a large selection of cat products. The Delectables line includes wet cat treats that can be offered as a snack or served as a topper over regular cat food.
This makes Delectables another possible stocking stuffer for households with cats. As with dog treats, cat owners should read the package carefully and choose a product that is appropriate for their pet’s age and nutritional needs.
Including both dogs and cats in holiday gift giving does not have to be complicated. A favorite treat, a fresh toy, or a useful grooming product can be enough to make their holiday experience special.
Hartz Offers More Than Dog Treats and Toys
Hartz is not limited to toys and treats. The company offers products across several pet care categories, including grooming supplies, training pads, dental products, flea and tick products, diapers, wellness items, and supplies for other household pets.
You can browse the current Hartz pet product selection to learn more about the options available for dogs and cats. Hartz does not sell products directly through its website, but individual product pages may include information about retailers where an item can be purchased.
Having multiple product categories available from one familiar company can make shopping easier, especially during the busy holiday season. Instead of grabbing the first pet gift package you see, you can choose individual products based on what your pet actually enjoys and needs.
Holiday Safety Tips for Dogs and Cats
Buying gifts for pets is enjoyable, but keeping them safe during the holidays is even more important. Decorations, wrapping materials, food, visitors, and electrical cords can all create new temptations.
- Supervise pets while they play with new toys or enjoy edible chews.
- Remove torn toys and loose pieces immediately.
- Choose treats and toys that are appropriate for your pet’s age and size.
- Keep ribbons, bows, plastic packaging, and wrapping paper away from pets.
- Do not allow pets to eat chocolate, sugar-free candy, cooked bones, or other foods that may be unsafe for them.
- Give nervous pets a quiet place where they can rest away from visitors and noise.
- Keep holiday plants, electrical cords, ornaments, and candles beyond their reach.
- Follow all feeding instructions printed on treat packaging.
It is also a good idea to open pet products before placing them in a stocking. Remove plastic wrapping, tags, fasteners, and any other packaging that could become a choking hazard. The product can then be placed inside the stocking by itself and given to the pet under supervision.
Would I Choose Hartz Products for the Holidays Again?
The Oinkies chews were easily the biggest success with my dogs. They were excited about the flavor, and the treats kept them occupied much longer than a typical bite-sized dog treat.
The Dura Play toys also created plenty of excitement, but they were not strong enough for my dogs’ determined chewing habits. I would consider them for a dog that enjoys carrying, chasing, and squeaking toys without aggressively shredding them. For powerful chewers like mine, close supervision is essential.
I appreciated having an opportunity to try products from different Hartz categories and observe how my pets responded. The experience also reminded me that the best pet gift is not necessarily the most expensive or elaborate one. It is the product that suits the individual pet’s size, personality, chewing habits, and preferences.
If you are putting together holiday stockings for your furry family members, Hartz offers plenty of possibilities. You can visit the official Hartz website to explore its current products and learn more about choosing treats, toys, and pet care essentials.
Our pets provide companionship, laughter, comfort, and unconditional love throughout the year. Including them in a few safe and thoughtful holiday traditions is one more way we can show them how much they mean to our families.
