As you all may know Detroit was on and popping this past weekend with the 2024 NFL Draft. I’m going to be honest here, when I heard, Detroit was going to host the 2024 NFL Draft yes, I too became worried. Detroit has often been unfairly stigmatized by negative news stories and crime reports. However, this time, people showed up and maintained order, defying those stereotypes.
With over 770,000 people downtown for the draft, the apprehension about potential mishaps was palpable. However, we must commend the extensive presence of the Detroit Police, as well as Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James White, for their remarkable efforts in maintaining order and ensuring the event’s success. According to CBSNEWS, over 2,500 men and women had their vacations and leaves canceled for three days….three days!
It was heartening to witness the diverse array of new faces from across the globe rallying behind Detroit and the 2024 NFL Draft.
According to Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer it has been a historic week in the great city of Detroit. This was a first ever record for Detroit, you see the 1st day of attendance, Detroit witness more than 275,000 fans showing up to see the first round.
Yes, the three-day event was FREE and you better believe the city generate more than millions in economic impact through sold-out hotels, bars, restaurants and merchandise sales.
Many native Detroit stars, like rapper Eminem, set the stage for the draft’s kickoff with a thrilling concert on Thursday. Lions’ Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, along with current Lions standouts Amon-Ra St. Brown and Aidan Hutchinson, were all enthusiastically present.
Numerous young men (257 athletes) were selected during the first night of the 2024 NFL Draft, and I’m certain they’re still reveling in the excitement. This is the culmination of their dreams to become professional football players, and I wholeheartedly wish them nothing but the best in their journey.
I can only say, I’m “PROUD” of Detroit and I hope this event will open the door for them to host many more events.
Well, done Detroit and congratulations to all the 257 athletes that were selected across seven rounds.
