3 Things That Make Your House a Home.

When you put the down payment on a house or the security deposit on an apartment, you’re purchasing a place to live. It will be up to you to create a space that you feel like you can call home. What makes a house a home? The answer might prove different for everyone. To some, it could be the people who live in it and the times you share together, for others it may be comfy furniture and great food. While the answers may vary, one thing is certain, what makes a home is what you put in it. Here are three things that will make your house feel like home:

  1. Comfort

When you’re home you want to be comfortable. There are a lot of ways you can make your home feel more comfortable:

  • Scent – Smell can impact your mood. To create a comfortable home, you can set the mood with scented candles, fragrance sprays, and air fresheners. The better the home smells, the more at ease you feel.
  • Temperature – There’s nothing worse than a living space that is too hot or too cold. To create a comfortable home, you will need to make sure you have a high-quality heating and cooling system. You will also want to schedule regular heat and air conditioning service to ensure you can always be comfortable at home.
  • Lighting – Lighting can affect mood and comfort level in a home. Try buying window treatments that allow a lot of natural light into the home to improve mood and comfort levels.
  1. Style and Décor

A house is not a home until you’ve been able to add your personal touches to it. Here are some solutions for adding style and décor to your living space:

  • Painting – An inexpensive way to put your personal touches on your home is to invest in some new paint. Applying a coat of paint on a room wall can change the way the space looks and feels. Try choosing colors that impact mood for more comfort, like using blues and greens.
  • Furniture – When you’re at home, you don’t want to feel like you can’t sit down and relax. Choosing high-end, uncomfortable furniture sends an uninviting message. However, investing in comfy furniture makes the house feel more like a home where people are welcomed and can relax.
  • Accessories – No home is complete without home décor accessories. Paintings on the wall, plants on side tables, throw pillows for a couch, and whatever other accessories you decide to add to the space help to add a personal touch and make your house feel more like your home.
  1. People and Memories

What else makes your house a home? The people you share it with and the memories you create while you live there. There is nothing like the joys of sharing your living space with friends and family. Take time to do things you enjoy in your home. From holiday dinners, to family game nights and more, the more time you spend in your space, the more it starts to feel like home.

Making your house into a home is an ongoing task. The longer you live in your home the more time you’ll have to fill it with things you love and share it with those you care about. Hopefully this has given you some insight on how to create a comfortable castle that you enjoy coming home to each day.

  • At our house it’s photos and artwork on the walls. For years I didn’t hang anything, then I met my husband who said “How about putting a photo of the dogs up?” After that, I was hooked and now have photos of the people (and creatures) we love everywhere. x

  • For me it’s lightening and scents. I love when the whole house has been cleaned from top to bottom and then also I always have a scentsy burning to welcome me home and my guest to my house. Right now it’s a stressful time so it’s lavender and eucalyptus. We keep a box of blankets in the family room for all to enjoy. Great tips!

  • Great information. I feel like all of our junk makes our house a home! ha!! These are some great tips to making a home nice, however. We need to reorganize some of our space.

  • Plants! That’s what my house needs more of inside. I’d also add a few snuggly blankets, and maybe a box of toys whether or not I had kids so that visiting families would feel even more comfortable. Great tips!
