Tips for Moving House with Kids

Moving house can be difficult enough as it is, but kids can make this process even more stressful. You have to think about how this will affect them and what you can do to minimize the impact it has on their lives. Children can often be anxious about moving and could be scared of moving to a new area, so it is a good idea to ensure they are prepared for the move and understand exactly what is going to happen.

Before you move

It is a good idea to start talking about the idea of moving with your children well before you actually have to move. Children may not understand the idea of a new house so talking to them and explaining what is happening may help them gain a better understanding of what is going on. Make sure you use positive language whenever you discuss moving so they know it is not a bad thing. If you can, it can also be beneficial to visit your new home with your kids before you move. You can show them around the area, take them to the closest park to play in, and give them a better idea of where they are moving to. This will help them feel more comfortable when they move in as the environment will not be completely new to them.

During the move

On the day you move house it can be a good idea to hire a babysitter for your kids. This will keep them out of the way of the removalists and will ensure they are safe and looked after. Moving home can be a messy process and quite time-consuming so it will only tire your kids out if they are with you. Even if you can find a friend or family member to watch them for a few hours, this will help you out a lot.

When you arrive at your new home with your kids you want to ensure they feels safe and at home in their new environment. Set up their rooms first so that they have something that reminds them of their old home, and ensure you have a few of their favorite toys or books ready for them to enjoy.

After the move

Once you have finished moving into your new home with your kids it is time to get them to adjust to their new surroundings. This may take some time depending on the age of your children, so make sure you are patient as they may require some extra attention to help them feel at home. You may need to spend more time with them at bedtime or think about buying them a house warming present.

Make sure you set up the kids rooms to look as similar as possible to their old rooms as well. To help them adjust you can try playing their favorite music, or give them some packing boxes to play with. Anything you can do to help them settle in will help at this point so try your best to ensure they like their new home.
