The first thing to know is that you should never touch a dead animal without some protective equipment, especially if you do not know the cause of death because this may be transmissible or also harmful to you. Wear gloves and coveralls, and then use equipment like shovels and disposal bags to carry the animal. Here is a good resource for more information on handling dead animals.

For small animals like birds, use a shovel to pick them up and put them in polythene or envelope. It would be best if you let professionals handle dead wild animals or stray animals on your street or by the roadside because wild animals are reservoirs of diseases and harmful pathogens. There is always professional dead animal removal services near you.

Methods of Disposal

Many methods are suitable for animal disposal. The one you choose should depend on the ease of disposal, type of animal, and cause of death. Some of these methods include:

  • Burial: This is one of the oldest disposal methods because it is efficient and easy. To bury your animal, you must choose a suitable burial site where the carcass will not contaminate any water source. The earth should not be too loose, so that wild animals or erosion will not dig up the carcass. Wrap the carcass in a bag and place it in a box. You can then bury it in a deep gravesite and seal the grave. Avoid coming in direct contact with the carcass and always protect yourself first.
  • Composting: This allows the natural decomposition process to take place. Bacteria and other microorganisms act on the carcass and reduce it to manure that enriches the soil and causes the earth to yield. It is a cheap source of fertilizer for your farm and garden, and companies have available equipment to help with the process. Collect the dead animal(s) in a compost pit and process them into manure.
  • Incineration/Burning: This method reduces the mass and the microorganisms that the carcass contains. In the case of disease condition or zoonosis, incineration is the best method of dead animal disposal. This method, however, is expensive and requires a lot of paperwork; therefore, it is best to just dispose of the dead animal using other methods except if incineration is absolutely unavoidable.
  • Call a Professional: A professional has more experience and knowledge than you do, and so they are in a better position to handle a dead animal. For a pet animal, you should call your veterinarian to help with the animal disposal. If the dead animal is wildlife or a stray animal, call professional wildlife removers to pick up the animal and make sure to stay away while they do their job.

Always have your safety as the top priority, and never try to touch a dead animal without protective gear.
