9 Long-Term Healthy Habits

We all want to be healthy and feel our best. The benefits of staying healthy are well-known – more energy, improved mood, better concentration, and possibly even more favorable life insurance premiums. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to make healthy choices. Often, we know what we should do but we don’t always do it. If you’re looking to make some long-term changes, here are nine healthy habits that can help you feel your best.

1. Incorporate exercise into your routine.

Exercise is important for so many reasons. It can help improve your mental health, increase your energy levels, and even help you sleep better. If you’re not used to exercising, start slow and build up gradually. You can also try different types of exercise to find what you enjoy most. Incorporating it into your routine at a time of day that feels right for you is the easiest way to start exercising and continue.

2. Eat a healthy diet.

Eating healthy foods can help improve your energy levels, mood, and overall health. It can help to focus on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats. Start with simple swaps, try new recipes, and build your healthy eating routine from there.

3. Get enough sleep.

Sleep is essential for good health. If you’re not getting enough sleep, you may be at risk for health problems. If you’re having trouble getting to sleep or getting the recommended number of hours, try to incorporate good sleep hygiene—limit screen time, have a set bedtime, make sure your bedroom is quiet and a comfortable temperature.

4. Take breaks during the day.

It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to rejuvenate your mind and body. Try to take a few minutes away from work every few hours. Get up and walk around, stretch, or do something else that relaxes you.

5. Get out in nature.

Spending time in nature can have numerous health benefits. It can help reduce stress, improve your mood, and increase your overall sense of well-being. If you’re looking to incorporate more time in nature, start by planning a hike, nature walk, or weekend trip to the woods.

6. Take care of a plant.

Are you a plant parent? Caring for a plant can help you feel more connected and responsible. Being around houseplants can also help create a more relaxing environment.

7. Connect with people you care about.

Having strong social connections is important for good health. Spending time with loved ones can help reduce stress and improve your mood. If you don’t have close friends or family nearby, try staying connected through social media or other means. Or get out and meet new people – join a local meetup group or sports team.

8. Do something you enjoy.

Hobbies and activities you love can bring joy to your day and break the monotony. Find an activity that you enjoy and make time for it every day or week.

9. Check in with yourself.

Take some time each day to check in with yourself. Ask yourself how you’re feeling and what you need, and make this action part of your daily routine. This can help you become more aware of your needs and how to take care of yourself.
