5 Mistakes That Are Ruining the Color of Your Blonde Locks

Whether you are one of the lucky 2% of the population with natural blonde hair or if you bleach your locks, you might be ruining your tresses with your own hands. Blonde haircare mistakes might seem like simple things. But they can result in serious damage to your locks and a huge hole in your wallet as repairing that damage costs a small fortune.

5 Blonde haircare Mistakes you Need to Fix Right Now

1.      Not differentiating between dry and damaged haircare

This is a very common issue for those who bleach their locks as bleaching means damage. So, many of these people stock up on repair treatments to care for their locks the best way. That’s a very good thing, but it’s essential to understand that not all colored hair needs this kind of care.

If you are using high-quality blonde dyes and immediate post-coloring treatments, your locks might restore on their own. However, all bleached hair will inevitably get dry. The important thing to understand is that shampoos and treatments focused on repair can damage dry locks further. They overload them with protein making the strands stiff and easier to break.

If you aren’t sure what kind of hair you have, consult a professional.

2.      Not giving extra care to the color

Even natural blonde hair grows darker with time. Therefore, you need to use specialized treatments to preserve the shade you love. The easiest way to do this is using tinting treatments and specialized haircare products. For those, who bleach their locks, this will reduce the frequency of treatments and thus protect the health of your hair.

Using specialized color-care products is most important for those, who prefer platinum and other silvery shades. These colors fade so fast, your locks might turn yellow in a week if you make even the slightest blonde haircare mistakes. What you need are a shampoo and conditioner that specifically prevent this. Fanola No Yellow for example contains a violet pigment, which counteracts the yellowing naturally. It acts similar to a hair tinting treatment, but it’s not an actual hair dye.

3.      Not touching up your roots in time

When you bleach your hair regularly, you need to get your roots done every 4-6 weeks. The point is to do this before they grow out over ¾ of an inch. Otherwise, your next coloring treatment might turn out uneven, which will require more treatments to fix and cause more damage to your locks.

This happens because the heat emitted by the body makes the coloring treatment develop faster. The ‘active area’ impacted by your body heat is about ¾ inches off the roots. Thus, if your hair grows out longer, a regular root treatment won’t be enough to even out the color.

4.      Not getting your regular trims

One of the other common blonde haircare mistakes is focusing only on the color. However, regular trims (every 6-8 weeks) are as important as touching up on your roots. Regardless of whether your locks are natural or colored, blondes have finer and more brittle hair. Therefore, it’s very likely to split even if you invest a fortune in nourishing and protective products. Split ends damage the entire strand as they ‘travel’ up very fast. Therefore, you should cut them regularly even if you are growing out your locks.

5.      Not protecting your hair from sunlight

UV radiation is extremely damaging to every part of your body. However, it’s also an annoyance to blondes as it naturally fades the color or turns it more yellow, depending on the shade. To prevent the damage and keep your locks beautiful, you’ll need to use SPF hairsprays as well as wear some kind of cover on your head as often as possible. Shopping for that new sun hat is a great idea, but don’t forget that UV rays are equally bad regardless of the season.

  • Wow, keeping your hair blonde sounds like way too much work for me! I have had friends with darker hair that have ruined their natural hair by bleaching it so often in order to make it blonde. Not only that, but the roots showing is a terrible look. I guess I am just too low maintenance for it, although it is very pretty! I prefer to keep my natural. 🙂
