Due to its versatility and durability, epoxy floor coating has become a popular choice for shiny and maintenance-free floors. However, some beginner mistakes can not only weaken the resin but also ruin your floor altogether.

So, it is better to avoid mistakes that prove costly down the road. Here are the most common errors you may commit when applying epoxy and how to overcome them.

  1. There is Moisture Buildup under the Coating

If you did not undertake moisture removal before using epoxy, you might find this buildup underneath the coating after some time. Also, if the temperature of epoxy and the floor differs a lot, this can happen.

Hence, when you etch the floor, always dry it up properly, and wait for 12-24 hours before applying the coating. It will help to remove the moisture trapped in the cracks or pores in the concrete.

As a result, the moisture will rise and create bubbles in the final finish. The same moisture can also separate the epoxy from the surface. Hence, do the moisture test on the floor and choose the appropriate treatment accordingly.

  1. If Epoxy Starts Peeling Off

Sometimes, the epoxy may peel off from the floor after application. It may happen due to improper preparation of the application, especially when the temperature is too high or low. Other factors may be improper preparation of concrete, presence of humidity, or grease on the floor.

Even if you have brand new flooring at your place, prepare it well before applying the epoxy. Acid etching is a part of the process, and you can also grind the concrete for the best results.

  1. Not Mixing the Epoxy Properly

If you fail to mix epoxy resin thoroughly, there may be chances of air bubbles in the final coat. Hence, use smaller batches and the right proportion of epoxy and hardener for mixing purposes.

Do not mix the resin for too long or too fast to avoid additional air bubbles. Take time and mix until it has a smooth consistency. Once you mix it properly, pour the contents immediately in the roller pan for application.

  1. The coating has Inconsistent Color

Several factors may lead to inconsistency in the color of the epoxy floor coating. It may be due to the uneven mixing of the components or presence of oil and grease on the concrete surface. Sometimes, color variations may also happen if you use multiple epoxy kits to cover the entire floor.

Apart from these, UV rays are also a leading cause of color alteration in epoxy. So, choose a UV-stable coating material with the right color in each kit. Also, mix it well and prepare the surface until it is smooth and precise.

  1. There are Air Bubbles under the Coating

When you apply epoxy in cold temperature conditions or under the direct sunlight, there may be air bubbles under the coating. Also, air bubbles result when you put epoxy on the porous concrete surface.

For avoiding this problem, prepare the concrete correctly for ensuring a perfect seal. Avoid application in too hot or too cold temperatures.

It can be tricky to apply an epoxy coating on the floor without professional help. Since you’ve spent a lot of money on buying the coating material, entrust the task of applying to the experts for the best results.
