PCS Edventures Lab RiQ Robot

My entire life, I’ve heard from the older generations that robots are going to take over the world. I disagree 100%. I believe it is children with HUGE intelligence that are going to take over the world!

Recently, I was sent the PCS Edventures Lab RiQ robot. This robot is amazing! It’s a build and program robot designed for children who are interested in computer programing, electronics, etc.

“School teacher Patrick McShane had a vision of creating an education center where K-12 students could engage with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects to enhance their learning and prepare themselves for a successful future. In 1988 McShane founded Pat’s Computer School, which he set up in the garage of his rural Idaho home. He worked tirelessly, creating hands-on projects to fuel a passion for education and an excitement about STEM subjects.”

My son, who’s 11 was so excited about this robot. He waited and waited and when RiQ finally arrived, we were almost scared to mess him up. Jake had to decide which robot he wanted to make from the six builds that are examples in the manual.

Once he decided which one he wanted to build, he and his friend, Max, poured out all the parts and immediately started working. Once he was put together, they turned him on and shrieks of joy filled my house.

We then logged onto the website and made sure the “brain” of the robot was attached to our Ipad. This is neat, because you can attach the robot, meaning control, from tablets (Android based), iPads, Mac Computers, or a windows based computer.

There are so many different ways to program the robot, however, it’s complicated. You have to set up the robot so that it reads from your device and then you have to program it further so that you can control it.

If you need help with the programing, there is a website that you can go to in order to get help, (robots built by other users), examples and there are You Tube videos.

This robot, as well as other products from PCS, are being used in schools, after school programs and homes. Children can learn so much from these little guys. If you have a child that has an interest in electronics or technology, this would be the perfect gift for them!

I’m so pleased that my child will be able to use this robot for a long time. He will be able to use and reuse as much as he likes. This is just the beginning of what could inspire him to learn about programming in school. It could help him decide what track he want to take in life. I’m excited for him as he discovers who he is and what he can accomplish.

  • Things have come so far in the manner in which they not only entertain, but also teach and challenge our children. They may not always act like it, but I believe each generation is more intelligent than the one before. lol

  • You are RIGHT!! Kids are definitely more technically smart!! My grandkids programmed our remote, setup my husband’s cell phone, taught him how to text (that was a sight to see!), each has their own tablets, I could go on!! I know this item would be a winner with them – I can hear the shrieks now!!!
