Most people are not aware that hair growth is linked to something called keratin. This is why having foods that can increase your body’s ability to produce keratin can make your hair healthier and stronger. For individuals who are suffering from hair loss or brittle hair, including keratin hair growth supplements can also help.

What is Keratin?

Keratin is a type of protein that’s composed of a blend of sixteen amino acids. Keratin is naturally found in your hair, nails, and skin. The importance of keratin is made clear by the fact that human hair is composed of approximately 95% keratin. Hair strands are protected by a layer of keratin, which can get damaged by harsh chemical hair treatments and heated styling tools. Long story short, this protein plays a vital role in keeping your hair shiny and healthy.

  • Foods That Can Boost Keratin Production

There is no food that contains keratin in particular. However, you can have food items that are rich in protein and other essential vitamins to give your body the supplies it needs to produce keratin. While it improves hair health, keratin is not just vital for your hair as it also important for healthy skin and nails. Listed below are the foods that support the production of keratin.

  • Foods that are rich in Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for keratin production. Good nutritional sources of Vitamin A include orange, pumpkin, cantaloupe, raw carrot, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes. Collard greens such as kale and spinach are also rich sources of Vitamin A.

  •     Biotin-rich Foods

Biotin is a type of B-Vitamin that helps in metabolizing amino acids. It is an essential nutrient that can potentially boost the keratin production. That’s why consuming foods that are rich in biotin like mushrooms, cauliflower, whole grains, beans, and nuts is a dietary must. Whether poached or had Rocky-style, eggs are also a great source of Biotin.

  • Protein-Rich Foods

Consuming food items that are loaded with protein give your body the essential building blocks for producing keratin. Foods such as yogurt, milk, eggs, pork, chicken, fish, and red meat are all good dietary sources of protein. Apart from these foods, protein can also be obtained from plant sources such as quinoa, nuts, and beans.

There are also several other foods that contain keratin-boosting ingredients that can promote hair growth. If your diet is nutritionally complete to support healthy keratin production, then consider supplementing your effort with keratin hair growth treatments and formulas. These treatments are a great way to replenish your body’s keratin reserves. Since keratin treatments involve using strong chemicals, it’s important to make sure that your hair and scalp is not sensitive to them.

  • Honestly I was unaware of what made our hair grow or how keratin was produced either. I do eat several of the foods mentioned in your post, but the Keranique products look interesting. I could definitely use the volume shampoo and the lift spray, but it looks more affordable to purchase all the products together rather than separate.

  • I did not know how keratin was produced until I read this. I know I am deficient in one of these vitamins but my hair seems to grow at a healthy rate. However, my daughter wishes hers would grow quicker. I will be sharing this with her.

  • I’ve heard so many good things about keratin and I do look for it in the products that I buy. Having said that, I’ve never actually a found ONE product that is made mainly of keratin. This is definitely one I would try.
